“PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Hotels and tourists rushed Thursday to prepare for Category 3 Hurricane John at the resorts of Los Cabos, where the storm was expected to dump heavy rain and blow dangerous winds.
Most of John’s fury was out at sea with its most damaging winds failing to touch the mainland.
The storm, which was moving northwest at 14 mph (22 kph) was aiming directly at the tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and following a path to hit land Friday.
Officials urged residents and tourists in Puerto Vallarta, the resort made famous by the 1964 movie “The Night of the Iguana,” to take precautions, but emergency shelters were mostly empty under cloudy but dry skies.
The hurricane had yet to pass Puerto Vallarta on its march up the coast. Thursday at 8 a.m. ET, it was located 95 miles (150 kilometers) west of Manzanillo with top sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph) and stronger gusts capable of damaging small buildings and ripping off roofs. (Path)
Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warned John could drop up to 18 inches (46 centimeters) of rain in some places and create up to a 5-foot (1.5-meter) storm surge. The weather center warned of “life-threatening flash floods and mudslides” in mountain areas.
John was expected to strengthen Thursday, and Mexico issued hurricane warnings for about 400 miles (640 kilometers) of coast, from the port of Lazaro Cardenas to the fishing and shipping community of San Blas, an area encompassing the bay that holds Puerto Vallarta.
The government also issued a hurricane warning for parts of southern Baja, including the twin resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
Forecasters said John wasn’t likely to affect the United States — cooler Pacific waters tend to diminish storms before they reach California.
Evacuation preps
Preparations were in full force in Cabo San Lucas, where John was likely to hit on Friday.
“We are preparing shelters for the evacuation of civilians, if that becomes necessary,” said Luis Armando Diaz, mayor of Los Cabos on Baja’s southern tip. “According to the information we have, the storm is coming right toward Los Cabos.”
Cabo San Lucas Port Captain Everardo Jimenez said he had ordered a tourist boat out of the water.
In Puerto Vallarta, Oregon tourist William Rousseau said hotel officials had warned his family about the storm, “but we’re calm because they say it’s not going to hit this city.”
“We’re continuing to enjoy the city,” he said. “They just asked us not to go into the ocean or on any bay tours.”
Cruise ship arrival postponed
Officials postponed the arrival of a Carnival cruise ship, prohibited tours of the bay and closed public schools. Puerto Vallarta Mayor Gustavo Gonzales said 50 shelters were ready.
Some coastal communities in Jalisco state, where Puerto Vallarta is located, were being evacuated because of their proximity to two dams, state authorities said.
Meanwhile, a new hurricane formed further west. Hurricane Kristy, with winds of nearly 75 mph (120 kph) was 690 miles (1,110 kilometers) away from John, but forecasters said some interaction was possible. If that happened, Kristy would likely be absorbed by the larger John, forecasters said.”

“If you turn your TV to WIFR-23 (Insight 5) around 7 tonight, be prepared for some tackling, sneaks and scores.
But it won’t be on “Big Brother 7: All-Stars.”
The reality show featuring Rockford’s George Boswell will be pre-empted by the Chicago Bears-Cleveland Browns game. WIFR will air “Big Brother” at 1:07 a.m. Friday.
You “BB” fans know this couldn’t be happening at a more dramatic time for “Chicken” George: He’s one of two houseguests who could be evicted from the house on tonight’s show, which airs live for non-Insight customers.
But you don’t have to stay up all night to know what happens. Check rrstar.com around 8:30 tonight for an update on George’s fate. GO columnist Georgette Braun will watch the live show with Boswell’s wife, Teresa, in a home with Charter cable, which won’t air the Bears game.

“”Chicken” George Boswell of Rockford could be evicted from the “Big Brother 7: All-Stars” house Thursday, but most of us won’t be able to see the CBS reality TV show until early Friday because a pre-season Chicago Bears game will pre-empt the original airing.
Local Insight Communications customers won’t be able to see Thursday’s live show on WIFR-23 (Insight 5) until 1:07 a.m. Friday. The Bears’ game against the Cleveland Browns will air during “Big Brother’s” typical 7 p.m. time slot. However, local Charter Communications customers will be able to see “Big Brother” at 7 p.m. Thursday.
On Tuesday’s show, Janelle won a competition and saved herself from eviction. Erika, as Head of Household, then nominated Danielle to take Janelle’s place.
Danielle and George are the least-connected of the remaining guests: The others, down from an original 14, are Will, who appears to have a “thing” going with Janelle, and Mike “Boogie,” who is sleeping with Erika.
If George gets kicked out of the house, though, he’ll be sequestered in a separate beachfront home with some of the other ousted guests. Those former guests will decide who the winner of the $500,000 prize is after the contestant pool gets down to two.
On Tuesday, George was the target of a few put-downs. First, the house was paid a one-time visit by Neil Patrick Harris, who starred on “Doogie Howser” and stars on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother.” Harris said George appears to be “a little … ah … ah … simple.” Will said George’s revelation that he was once struck by lightning “explains his unique behavior.”

“From 8 to 9, CBS’ “Big Brother: All-Stars” (prelim 3.1/10 in 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall) beat “Duets” (2.9/9, 7.7 million) across the board. And in its second hour, the Fox skein (prelim 3.1/8 in 18-49, 8.6 million) ran second to CBS’ “Rock Star: Supernova” (3.2/9, 7.0 million) in 18-49 but won out in total viewers.”

“On Big Brother 6, James Rhine relied on the Power of Veto to save himself from eviction. But after losing a tense veto competition on last week’s Big Brother 7: All-Stars, where he and Janelle wrestled over a voodoo doll, he was eliminated from the game. TVGuide.com caught up with James to find out how it was in the house without his girlfriend, Sarah (his secret partner from BB6), and why he turned on the Season 6 alliance.”

“Oh, Hurricane John! Do me, do me, do me!”
Weather Underground calls for 100% chance of thunderstorms on Saturday, that precipitation starting on Friday. That’s going to be the edge of Hurricane John, currently level 3 and expected to raise up to level 4 again before it hits.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Hurricane John churned along Mexico’s Pacific Coast on Thursday, lashing beaches with winds and rain but staying just far enough offshore to prevent major damage.
The storm was expected to make a direct hit Friday in the resorts of Los Cabos, where government officials rushed to prepare.
